Root canal treatment is defined as the process of removing the infected or damaged pulp (nerve and vascular tissue) on the inside of the tooth and cleaning and filling this space. This treatment is a procedure performed to save the tooth and prevent its extraction. Root canal treatment cleans the infection inside the tooth and relieves pain by preserving the natural structure of the tooth.
Situations Requiring Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is usually necessary in the following cases:
- Deep Caries: When cavities progress to the pulp of the tooth, infection and pain occur.
- Dental Trauma: The pulp may be damaged as a result of blows or trauma to the tooth.
- Fracture or Crack of the Tooth: If the tooth is fractured or cracked, bacteria can enter the pulp chamber and cause infection.
- Advanced Periodontal Diseases: Advanced gum diseases can damage the pulp of the tooth.
Root Canal Treatment Treatment Process
- Examination and X-ray: The dentist performs a clinical examination and takes x-rays to evaluate the condition of the tooth. At this stage, the spread of the infection and the condition of the tooth roots are examined.
- Anesthesia: Before the treatment, local anesthesia is applied to ensure the comfort of the patient. In this way, the patient does not feel pain during the procedure.
- Cleaning the Pulp Chamber: A small hole is made in the upper part of the tooth and infected pulp tissue is removed. The channels are cleaned and shaped with special tools.
- Disinfection: The inside of the tooth is washed and disinfected with antiseptic solutions to completely remove the infection.
- Filling and Coating: The cleaned canals are filled with biocompatible fillers. The upper part of the tooth is restored with a permanent filling or covering (crown). This process preserves the natural structure of the tooth and prevents it from breaking.
Advantages of Root Canal Treatment
- Saving the Tooth: Root canal treatment preserves the natural tooth structure by saving the tooth instead of extracting it.
- Pain Relief: Removing the infected pulp eliminates pain and sensitivity in the tooth.
- Functional and Aesthetic Recovery: The treated tooth regains its natural appearance and function.
- Long-Lasting Solutions: Teeth treated with root canal treatment can remain healthy for many years with proper care.
Things to Consider After Root Canal Treatment
There are some important points to consider during the healing process after root canal treatment:
- Regular Dental Care: Regular brushing and flossing of teeth is important in protecting the treated tooth and general oral health.
- Consuming Soft Foods: Consuming soft and warm foods for the first few days helps the treatment area heal.
- Dentist Check-ups: Going for dentist check-ups at regular intervals allows the condition of the treated tooth to be monitored.
